OddityRC 12S 12V BEC: Give Peripherals Their Own Power Budget

OddityRC 12S 12V BEC module — product introduction

The OddityRC 12S 12V BEC is a step-down regulator with a listed 12–55V input range and 12V output. It is a product to consider when a higher-voltage battery system needs a separate supply for compatible 12V equipment. The selection should start with the peripheral’s actual voltage and current requirements.

Draw the rail before choosing the regulator

List every device you intend to power, its required voltage and its sustained and startup current. Add the loads that can operate at the same time. This makes the regulator choice traceable and helps avoid using the peak output figure as though it were the continuous budget.

At 12V, 2A corresponds to a nominal 24W output budget, calculated from the stated ratings. That arithmetic is not a thermal test or a guarantee for every mounting location. Include ambient conditions, cooling and wiring when judging whether the selected regulator has adequate margin.

A useful supply still needs the right load

The store lists low-current 12V examples such as the Phoenix 2 camera at 85mA and the separate 3.3G or 4.9–5.8G VRX at 150mA. Those figures help illustrate a load budget, provided the exact selected device and connector wiring match the plan.

A 5V-only receiver is a different requirement and must not be connected directly to a 12V rail. Similarly, the fact that this BEC accepts a 12S-class supply does not mean an attached FC, camera or receiver can accept that battery voltage. Label each regulated output clearly.

Make measurement part of commissioning

Check the assembled regulator output before connecting a sensitive peripheral. An appropriate DC test can compare input demand and output demand under a repeatable load. A single meter used in separate controlled runs can help estimate efficiency, provided the load and measurement conditions remain consistent.

PM90 has a listed 6V minimum, so a 12V rail is within its stated measurement-voltage range, but connections and current limits still apply. The BEC page also says there is no reverse-input protection. Verify polarity and wiring independently of the features described for other equipment in the system.

Before you choose

  1. Total the simultaneous 12V peripheral load.
  2. Use the continuous rating and leave appropriate design margin.
  3. Verify polarity and output voltage before attaching equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Can the BEC supply 5A continuously?

The listing identifies 2A continuous and 5A peak. It does not establish 5A as a sustained output rating.

Will it power a 5V-only receiver directly?

No. Its output is 12V; use a supply matched to the receiver’s actual requirements.

Does it protect against reversed input wiring?

The product page explicitly says there is no reverse-input voltage protection.
