ODD SELECT / VOL.04
Which EMAX servo should you choose for your RC or maker project?
Choose ES08MA II for a compact analog option, ES08MD II for a compact digital alternative, ES3352 for a lightweight aircraft shortlist, ES9052MD when micro size matters, and ES3005 when a larger analog format fits the load. Confirm voltage, mounting dimensions and torque before choosing.
ODD SELECT is OddityRC's curated range of third-party RC and maker hardware. These guides explain why products were selected, where they fit and what to check before choosing.
Quick comparison: five EMAX servos at OddityRC
| Model | Control type and format | Selection direction |
|---|---|---|
| ES08MA II | Analog, 12g class, metal gears | Small RC models and light-duty mechanisms |
| ES08MD II | Digital, 13g class, metal gears | Compact builds requiring digital control |
| ES3352 | Digital, 12.4g class, metal gears | Lightweight fixed-wing aircraft and gliders |
| ES9052MD | Micro digital, metal gears | Projects with limited weight and space |
| ES3005 | Analog, 42g class, metal gears | Larger mechanisms where size and weight are acceptable |
These application groupings are OddityRC's selection guidance. They are not a ranking of accuracy, reliability or measured performance.
ES08MA II: Compact Analog Control
The ES08MA II is a 12g-class analog servo with metal gears. We selected it as an option for small RC models and light-duty mechanisms where its dimensions and load capability match the project. EMAX lists both normal and reverse versions, making direction another detail to check before ordering. See the manufacturer's ES08MA II listing.
Metal gears are a construction detail, not a guarantee against overload or impact damage. Set the linkage and travel so the servo is not driven against a mechanical stop.
ES08MD II: A Compact Digital Alternative
The ES08MD II offers digital control in a 13g-class metal-geared format. It belongs on the shortlist when a compact digital servo is required. Its control type alone does not establish better accuracy, speed or reliability for every application. EMAX identifies it separately from the analog ES08MA II in its micro-servo range.
Check the controller's supported signal settings and the supply's current capacity. A digital servo still needs a suitable mechanical installation and stable power.
ES3352: A Lightweight Aircraft Option
EMAX lists the ES3352 as a 12.4g digital metal-geared servo for aircraft and gliders. We selected it for builders comparing options for light airframes and control surfaces. The manufacturer's product page establishes that intended application.
Before choosing it, measure the servo bay and check horn clearance, linkage geometry and required travel. A low weight is useful only when the servo can also meet the control-surface load.
ES9052MD: A Micro Digital Option
The ES9052MD adds a smaller digital metal-geared option to this selection. Consider it when space and weight are primary constraints, then verify the dimensions, voltage range and torque of the supplied version against your mechanism. EMAX lists the ES9052MD and its HV counterpart separately.
Avoid treating a micro servo as a direct replacement for a larger unit simply because the connector is similar. The output shaft, mounting pattern and working load also need to match.
ES3005: A Larger Analog Format
EMAX lists the ES3005 as a 42g metal-geared analog servo. It provides a larger-format option for projects that can accommodate its size and weight. Compare it when the smaller models do not meet the mechanism's requirements, using the exact version's published voltage and torque conditions. See the EMAX analog-servo range.
Match the Complete Installation
Use the model names precisely: ES3005 and ES3005 HV, for example, should not share a specification table unless each version is identified. Confirm voltage, mounting dimensions, horn fit, travel and supply capacity before installation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ES08MA II and ES08MD II?
ES08MA II is an analog servo; ES08MD II is digital. Both are compact metal-geared options. Digital control alone does not prove that a servo is faster or more accurate in your application.
Is ES3005 the same as ES3005 HV?
No. Treat the standard and HV versions as separate products and check each version's specifications. This comparison covers the standard ES3005.
Which option should I compare for a small glider?
ES3352 is explicitly listed by EMAX for aircraft and glider applications. Check control-surface loads, servo-bay dimensions and linkage travel before selecting it.
